Flamenco and ballet might sound like an odd pairing, but sometimes the most unexpected combinations make the biggest impact. This September, the internationally acclaimed Barcelona Flamenco Ballet is coming to Cyprus for the first time, and they’re bringing with them a bold, electrifying take on Carmen.
Under the creative direction of David Gutierrez – often described as the Freddie Mercury of Flamenco – the Limassol, Larnaca and Nicosia performances will not be your classic, traditional flamenco shows. Gutierrez’s version of Carmen is wild, emotional and unafraid to push boundaries. Fusing ballet with flamenco, storytelling with raw energy, he brings to life the essence of Carmen and what the Spanish dance represents: passion, pain and the desire to be free.
The show reimagines Prosper Mérimée’s iconic story and George Bizet’s legendary music, adding a fresh layer of intensity through movement and rhythm. Gutierrez’s success is said to hide not only behind choreographing steps but also reshaping flamenco for the 21st century, blending cultures, genres and styles in a way that makes this Carmen feel at once timeless and brand new.
